Sinners in the Hands of An Angry God essays

Sinners in the Hands of An Angry God essays Jonathan Edwards gave this sermon on July 8, 1741. It was directed to the audience that he was speaking to. The audience consisted mainly of people that have forgotten all about God, and who were worshipping other gods. His sermon was primarily aimed at persuading them to turn back to God. This made Jonathan Edwards very angry. His sermon was very harsh. One of his major concerns was that people would go to hell. He said that God is enraged at the people because of their sinning, and the people are not doing anything about it. They are not repentant, and they are not trying to pacify Gods anger. He also said that God has been holding his anger back, and could let it loose at any time, and wipe them all out. These people could have saved themselves if they had prayed and believed in God. The worst thing about being in hell is that it is an eternal torture. Jonathan told the audience that there were many people in the same state as they are in, but they are now truly enjoying life, and all they did was open back up to God. These people comprehended the message of this sermon very well. They understood that hell was a terrible place to be for the rest of your life. One big tool Edwards used to help the audience understand their predicament was that he used imagery throughout the sermon. Some of these examples were so vivid and detailed that the audience understood what he was saying. Another way that the audience understood this was because they knew that they were in serious trouble. They wanted to find a way to help themselves get out of the dilemma that they were in, so they probably knew what he was talking about since the tone of his voice was so heated. They did not want to go to hell, and so they thought if they stopped acting so hedonistic, they would be better off.. ...

Corporate Leadership and Change Management Essay

Corporate Leadership and Change Management - Essay Example Jack Welch and Steve Jobs. In the case of GE, it was a company with a long established tradition of good business practices and success in their own particular fields that was on the decline. In the case of Apple, it was a company that had a rich history to call on but the current products were hurting the company more than helping it. These examples can be studied in light of relevant theories and examples given by employees as well the individuals who participated in the change management process to show how leadership as well as the culture of the organization can be used to take a company to new heights. No company in the world across any industry in any location is as well respected and appreciated as GE (Demos, 2006). Throughout its existence, and more recently in current years, analysts from the fields of management, administration, human resources and organisational behaviour have all given their highest respect to GE (Fisher, 2006). A large part of this respect comes from the way GE handles its organisational aspects of Leadership and company culture of which examples have been given by those who have been a part of GE as well as those who have observed it from afar. There was certainly was a man at the top who ran GE for many years before stepping down to make way for the new guard, the policies and methods used by Jack Welch have remained popular with the company and little has changed despite his exit. The systems established by him have not only been used by GE, they have also been implemented in other Fortune 500 companies as standard practices. In fact, the systems created by Welch were so good that they are continued in place with modifications made only when necessary (Colvin, 2006). It is clearly no wonder than Business Week hailed him as the singe best manager in all of America long before he wrote his own book on management and leadership (Byrne, 1998). It was the particular

Organisations and Behaviour Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2750 words - 1

Organisations and Behaviour - Essay Example Decision making is something that keeps the organization active and flourishing while adapting the uncertainties in the environment. The process of Decision making gets heavily influenced by the rate at which the information travels and the number of members it can reach inside an organization. These two factors are generally considered as less positive in a hierarchical structure of an organization. Today the trend of participation of the workers in the decision making process is significantly dominating the markets. According to Frederick Winslow Taylor who is regarded as the Father of Scientific Management, the management of the firm should organize the work in a manner which will make optimum use of the workers, by dividing the work and introducing efficient methods for making a product. Taylor’s concept focused mainly on hierarchic organization structures and task specialization. Taylorism states that there is a best way for each task and it can be learnt through proper t raining and development. (Asseldonk & Vos, 2007, pp. 1-3) The theory of Taylorism represents a mass production system. This theory views the workforce simply as machineries which can be made efficient by the reduction of wastage. However, this theory completely neglects the usual complications that happen within a normal human being. Hawk Car company continuously followed conventional production methods as was proposed by Taylor’s theory. The workers used to follow an assembly line production process where each one had to perform a specific job. Job specialization created frustration among the workers. Their job became monotonous. For example, the worker who used to fit lights into the vehicles, continued to fit lights for his whole work life. He never knew how to fix the seats in a car. As a result the workers felt lazy and de-motivated with their work. Also the hierarchical system in the management treated the workers as costs. Their opinion or suggestion was not at all con sidered to be important. Due the hierarchy structure of the organization, the workers felt uncomfortable speaking to their managers about their discomfort. The relationship between the manager and the workers followed the authoritative style where two way communications was never entertained. The higher level employees only used to give directions to the workers and the supervisors only had a close watch on their works. No one bothered about the grievances of the employees. (tiplady.org.uk. n.d, pp.1-2) also the standardized form of production failed to meet the market demands. Taylorism way of management prescribed the organization to separate the planning and execution activities. It recommended division of labor and too much hierarchy into the management. However, the management of Hawk Car Company realized soon that too many levels in the organization makes the functions too much complicated. For the betterment, management opted for participative style of management where the la yers of hierarchy were reduced putting emphasis on the participation of each member in the decision making and planning process. It also trained the employees in such a manner so that they can gain knowledge about the entire production system. The workers were provided scope to grow in their position by better performance. The training focused on the worker’s personal issues as well which were addressed with care. The aim of this remodeling decision

Eiserhowers significance in civil rights Essay Example for Free

Eiserhowers significance in civil rights Essay How significant was Dwight D Eisenhower in improving civil rights for African Americans during his presidency (1953-1961)? Eisenhower was both partially significant and not, regarding improving civil rights during his presidency. Reason being, Ike was criticized for a variety of decisions he made. Arthur Larson emphasised that he had a â€Å"failure to speak out†. However, David Greenberg believed Eisenhower was significant and stated that it â€Å"was his judicial nominees who made the revolution possible†. Eisenhower was the 34th President of the United States (1953-1961) and presided during key moments xin the civil rights movements including the Montgomery Bus Boycott, Brown v Board act, The Little Rock 9 and the Civil Rights Act of 1957. He was a republican and believed that each state should have their own laws and cases shouldn’t have to be dealt with by the president. These events lead to many historians and people to question whether Eisenhower was effectively managing the cases and how significant he was to change in Civil Rights for African Americans. Although Eisenhower’s significance was strongly opposed by many, he clearly played a huge part in improving civil rights for African Americans. The judgement of the Brown v Board case was really significant in improving civil rights for African Americans. Eisenhower’s appointment of Earl Warren as Chief Justice of Supreme Court was really significant. Earl Warren was pro civil rights and desegregation and stated that â€Å"separate educational facilities are inherently unequal†. This statement was due to the fact that blacks weren’t being given the same opportunities as white children at school. He knew they had the same potential but weren’t provided with mutual resources. This was in favour Oliver Brown’s case and the Supreme Court was in favour of equality in both races. This progress meant that Eisenhower made huge significance towards improving Civil Rights as it was him who appointed Earl Warren and this wasn’t the first time that there were equal opportunities for black children in school. However, Ike described appointing Earl Warren as â€Å"The biggest mistake I ever made†. This suggests that he wasn’t happy about the outcome of the case and that he had conflicting ideas in comparison to Earl, regarding the Civil Rights. This signifies that Eisenhower was disappointed that the case had finished at a quick pace and didn’t like the changes that actually happened. Although he said he regretted it, he still did an extremely significant thing by employing Earl Warren as it helped improve Civil Rights. Going back to a previous quote, Smith stated that his â€Å"judicial nominees who made the revolution possible†. In this case, Smith is obviously referring to Eisenhower’s appointment of the judge Earl Warren as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. Earl Warren was an extremely respected man and was given a big role in being responsible to fight for Oliver Brown’s case. This reinforces the fact that Eisenhower’s employment of Earl Warren was a major factor in improving Civil Rights. Another key event that was important throughout Eisenhower’s presidency was the intervention at Little Rock. Eisenhower stated that the â€Å"mob rule cannot be allowed to override the decisions of our courts† which was encouraging as it meant that he wouldn’t allow African American’s to be threatened in school, a place where people should learn and feel safe, not terrified. This was hugely significant as it proved that Eisenhower was determined to desegregate schools and have a positive change for African Americans. Eisenhower also stated that â€Å"leniency can encourage defiance†. This also showed that Eisenhower was motivated to lure everyone into changing their racist ways as he demanded everyone to stay strong. This shows improvement to Eisenhower’s attitude. This is significant as, since he was the President, the fact he said this would have encouraged everyone to be brave and fight discrimination. However, Eisenhower confronted that â€Å"our enemies gloated over this incident† which shows that Eisenhower only acted due to the fact of the Cold War and he didn’t want other Countries to see America in a negative perspective. This shows that Eisenhower didn’t act from free will, he was concerned about other people’s views and so reacted. Overall, in regards to the intervention at Little Rock, Eisenhower was extremely effective. On the other hand, Eisenhower also acted in ways that weren’t significant in improving Civil Rights for African Americans. In key events such as the Montgomery Bus Boycott, Sit-ins and Freedom Rides he didn’t act at all however in Little Rock 9 he was forced to act due to the opinions of other countries and people regarding America which was shown when he stated â€Å"our enemies are gloating over this incident† as he intervened due to other’s opinions. He also had the opinion that â€Å"there is a state law on boycotts†. This shows that he was a republican and believed all cases should be dealt with by the government, not the president. This links with the fact that Eisenhower was quite laid back as he believed it wasn’t his responsibility to deal with problems. James Farmer stated â€Å"we planned the freedom rides with the intention of creating a crisis† which shows they wanted to provoke a reaction from Eisenhower. This did alert Eisenhower, however, because of his laid back attitude he didn’t intervene which caused a delay in the improvement of civil rights, showing he wasn’t significant. Eisenhower wasn’t significant because of his personal beliefs. He privately stated that â€Å"making people do things by force is plain nuts†. This shows how Eisenhower had an attitude that people should do what they want without people interfering. This shows that Eisenhower wasn’t significant because if he had used his power as president correctly he could have made a big difference. This is seen in the quote by the historian David Greenberg the â€Å"Fight for civil rights†¦ demanded the use of the bully pulpit† which shows that historians consider his failure to intervene to have been a massive set back to the civil rights movement. Historian Roy Wilkins said â€Å"if he fought the Second World War like he fights for civil rights, we would all be speaking German right now†. This shows that Eisenhower is not the best person to have in a position of authority. This clearly states that he didn’t put in much effort regarding fighting for civil rights. Showing he wasn’t a good leader and so is insignificant. To conclude, after analysing a range of sources, both negative and positive, we can see that Eisenhower was significant in improving the lives of African Americans during his presidency. He presided over key events, most importantly, the appointment of Earl Warren and The Little Rock 9. Although, some may say he only acted due to pressure from other countries, this does not change the fact that he played a huge part in improving civil rights for African Americans. Under the presidency of Eisenhower things did change, no matter if he was forced to do it or not, he still helped improve Civil Rights for African Americans which is all that matters. As Roy Wilkins stated, â€Å"if he fought the second World War like he fights for civil rights, we would be speaking German right now† which shows he didn’t put in much effort in improving Civil Rights for African Americans.

Indian Community Concerns About Teenage Drinking :: essays papers

Indian Community Concerns About Teenage Drinking Homelessness, condition of people who lack regular legal access to housing. Homelessness has been recognized as a significant social problem in the United States since the early 1980s, when an increase in the number of homeless people was caused by a weak economy and cuts in federal aid for housing and income assistance. Other periods of increased homelessness also have occurred many times in history, including during the colonial era. Most other industrialized societies also have experienced increases in homeless populations in recent decades. The number of homeless people in the United States has been an arguable issue for a while. Advocates for the homeless claim that there are several million homeless people; however, recent studies suggest that the homeless number from 600,000 to 700,000. Exact numbers are impossible to collect because researchers define homelessness in different ways and because the homeless are transitory. The number of people predicted to become homeless in any given year is estimated to be three to five times the number of people who are homeless at any given moment. The US Census Bureau attempted to count homeless people in the 1990 census. However, most people consider this attempt as a failure. The homeless population is largely made up of adult men, but the number of women, children, and youth has steadily increased. This group now comprises more than 40 percent of the total homeless population. Most homeless people are also extremely poor and separated from their families and other social networks. About one-third of the adult homeless are chronically mentally ill, and about half are alcoholic or abuse drugs. During the 1950s, most homeless people were older, white, alcoholic men associated with the rundown sections of cities known as skid rows. Today's homeless, however, are mostly non-white; relatively young, with an average age in the middle 30s; and include a large number of women and children. About one-third of homeless men are veterans. In addition to the homeless population, even larger numbers are considered â€Å"marginally housed†; they are in danger of becoming homeless because of poverty or unavailable housing. About half the nation's poor households spend 70 percent or more of their monthly income on housing, which puts them at risk of becoming homeless if faced with an economic problem. Because the number of people living in poverty numbers some 37 million, the marginally housed would amount to nearly 20 million people, creating the potential for a vast increase in the size of the homeless population. Those who are housed only because they have been able to stay with

Great Gatsby Analytical Writing Essay

Gatsby is a pillar of the American literary canon and has been woven over generations into the very fabric of American culture. You should read this text carefully and interactively – annotating your text so that, during class discussions, you are able to find and reference meaningful passages. On the second day of classes you will turn in a well-crafted, thoughtful essay of 3-6 pages. Your essay must be typed, doubled spaced, in 12 pt. Times New Roman font, with one-inch margins and formatted according to proper Modern Language Association (MLA) standards [proper header, page numbers, and parenthetical citations]. If you have any doubt about how to write in MLA format, consult the most recent edition of the MLA handbook (available in the ISS library). This will be my first encounter with your formal writing. Some things to consider when writing a formal literary analysis paper: 1.The paper should have a defined, focused, and assertive argument (thesis). 2.The paper should be written in third person (no use of â€Å"I,† â€Å"we,† â€Å"you,† etc.). 3.The paper should be written in the literary present tense (e.g. â€Å"Gatsby goes†¦Ã¢â‚¬ as opposed to â€Å"Gatsby went†¦Ã¢â‚¬ ). 4.The paper should paraphrase and quote specific passages as evidence to support claims. 5.Quoted material should be properly assimilated in the student’s writing. 6.The paper should be structured according to a logical progression for the argument. 7.The paper should be thoroughly edited for proper grammatical usage. 8.The paper should hold the reader’s interest. 9.Good essays have interesting titles. Options for responding to the text: 1.Choose two characters in the work and compare them – noting their similarities and differences. Do so, though, not merely on a surface level, but in such a way that you explore the greater issues and concerns of the novel that the characters’ represent. 2.Choose two particular places that represent two opposing forces or ideas that are central to the novel. Write an essay explaining how the places differ, what each place represents, and how their contrasting contributes to the meaning of the work. 3.Choose at least two â€Å"social† scenes from the novel and discuss how these scenes establish some of the values or concerns that pervade the novel.

Computer Crimes on the Internet Its the 90's, the dawn of the computer age. With technology changing and evolving everyday, it may seem hard not to slip behind in this ever changing world. The Information Super-Highway has been following computers throughout the past few years. Along with the Internet, an emerging group of elite cyber-surfers have turned into today's computer hackers. Most people don't know about them, most people don't know they exist, but they are out there, lurking in the shadows, waiting for there next victim. It can be a scary world out there (Welcome to the Internet). In reality it is not nearly as bad as it sounds, and chances are it won't happen to you. There are many fields of hacking on the Internet. The most popular type of hacking is software piracy. "According to estimates by the US Software Piracy Association, as much as $7.5 billion of American software may be illegally copied and distributed annually worldwide"(Ferrell13). Hackers "pirate" software merely by uploading software bought in a store to the Internet. Uploading is send information from point A(client) to point B(host); downloading is the opposite. Once it is uploaded to the Internet, people all over the world have access to it. From there, hackers trade and distribute the software, which in hacker jargon is warez[AO1]. Industrial Espionage is another main concern on the Internet. Most recently, the FBI's World Wide Web page hacked and turned into a racial hate page. Anyone can access files from a WWW page, but changing them is very hard. That is why most hackers don't even bother with it. CNET stated "This Web site should have been among the safest and most secure in the world, yet late in 1996, it got hacked."(Ferrell18). To change a web page, hackers simply upload a new, modified version of the web page, in place of the original. But fortunately, almost all Internet Service Providers (ISP), the computer you dial to for Internet access, have protection called a firewall, which kicks off all users trying to gain access of change information that are not authorized. "Theft and destruction of company files is increasing faster than the ability to stop it"(Rothfeder170). Another field of hacking on the Internet is Electronic-mail hacking. A hacker can intercept Email enroute and read it with no detection. To safeguard this, companies use encryption programs and no one but the sender and its recipient can read it(Rothfeder225). A mail bomb is another type hack on the Net. "A mail bomb is simply an attack unleashed by dumping hundreds or thousands of Email messages onto a specific address"(Ferrell20). The only way to fix this problem is to either sit there and delete each message one by one, or to call you Internet Service Provider for help. Email forgery is also common. A hacker can change the return address on any given piece of Email to anything they want, such as [emailprotected] This is illegal because you can use someone else's address to send false Email to people. Oracle Systems CEO Larry Ellison fell victim to forgery when a former employee accused him of sexual harassment and used a forged email message to help plead her case. And Bob Rae, the former premier of Ontario, suffered political embarrassment as a result of a

Asylum Seekers

They are fleeing a situation where the Sri Lankan government is killing 1400 a week of the 300,000 detained in concentration camps. This is a horror that drives people to flee with nothing other than the clothes on their back, is what politicians and media have taken to calling a â€Å"push factor. There is absolutely nothing illegal about seeking asylum, about arriving without authorisation or papers, or about coming by unregistered boats as long as there is a legitimate reason states the United Nations. However the Australian Government still labels them illegal immigrants and places them in Detention Centres which in most cases results in the emotional and psychological damage to a refugee. In 2002, the Medical Journal of Australia described the extreme psychological and emotional damage done to people detained in immigration detention in Australia. The pattern they describe includes â€Å"the development of a psychological state characterised by severe depression, despair, hopelessness, paranoia, chronic rage, persecutory delusions, sub-syndromal psychosis, characterological change and persistent self harming behaviour†. In their sample, â€Å"all but one of the detained asylum seekers displayed symptoms of psychological distress at some time during their period of detention†. Eighty-five per cent had â€Å"chronic depressive symptoms† and sixty-five per cent had â€Å"pronounced ongoing suicidal ideation†. Refugees should not have to stay in conditions conducive to mental disorders and suicidal tendencies. If the Australian government wishes to fix the problem they should fix detention centres, make the facilities more humane and turn off the electric fence,( The electric fences around such centres are more harmful than that of Auschwitz concentration camp). The government should also provide faster processing of refugees so these people are not subjected to what is incarceration with committing a crime. In 2002 protesters tore down the fences of Woomera Detention Centre, assisting people inside to make a courageous and inspiring breakout. They would not hesitate to do it again. Asylum seeking is an issue that cuts right to the heart of everything that’s rotten and inhumane about capitalism – its racism, its hypocrisy, its brutality and its utter contempt for humanity. We should all stand firmly for the rights of asylum seekers. Security Risk Analysis for Intrusion Detection and Prevention of Essay

Security Risk Analysis for Intrusion Detection and Prevention of Cybercrime - Essay Example Data and alert correlation in the military network and the future of intrusion detection and prevention methods are touched upon. The paper recommends appropriate procedures to control the threats and reduce the vulnerability of the system to lower the level and make them acceptable keeping in mind the military network and the sensitivity of data protection in this case. Top five risks are analyzed and briefly reviewed. Current federal legislation and the standards based on securing and preventing cybercrime will be analyzed. Steps will be recommended to implement and maintain the strategy proposed. Risk analysis terms Security risk analysis also referred called risk assessment, is a basic requirement of any organization. Essentially, controls and expenditures are largely commensurate with the risks to that an organization posses. Many conventional means for conducting a security risk analysis are turning out to be more indefensible in terms of criticality, flexibility and usability. Qualitative Risk Analysis It is the most pervasively used approach to security risk analysis. No probability data is required and only estimates of potential loss are used. Elements of qualitative risk analysis: Vulnerabilities – These are factors that make a system prone to attack or make an intrusion more likely to succeed or have an impact. For example, flammable material. Threats – What could go wrong or something/ situations that can attack the information system. For instance, fraud or fire. Controls – The countermeasures put up by management for vulnerabilities. They include preventive control, detective controls, deterrent controls etc. Security Risk Analysis for Intrusion Detection and Prevention of Cybercrime The satellite communication systems form the backbone of net centric warfare for the US Military and give it considerable advantage over others. The close integration of the communication system and its distribution to local level commanders puts this system far ahead of other armies as by (Bufkin 2011) â€Å"This is unique feature of this system – no other department of defense satellite system can relay information from the satellite all the way down to war fighters, portable communications packs and handheld radios†. The system, however, like any other is not perfect and present some vulnerabilities in its operation. The modern communication systems have evolved and are far more secure than their predecessors. The interception methods have evolved along with these advancements and therefore security and threats are circling in an infinite loop. Both are constantly evolving. Contrary to popular opinion, cybercrime is a risk to all industries including military networks. If intrusion detection methods are not effective, cybercrimes results in security breaches long before the victims become aware that the systems are compromised. In case of military networks, the stakes are very high as the data includes sens itive information that may even include strategic plans, communication infrastructure details and even present situation reports. Any of these if intercepted can jeopardize complete communication network and leave military in a blackout. As per Foreign Affairs, Defense and Trade Division in 2008 â€Å"
